It was winter 1944 when Kaitlyn and Dalton met in war-torn northern Italy. The Bolsheviks, as we still called them back then, swept across the fields remorselessly, devouring everything.

Dalton was down to his last can of Heinz baked beans army rations when he noticed a pale slip of a girl hiding behind a Fiat 509 automobile, eating a sausage and sourdough bun she had stolen from one of the Krauts.

Again, that's just what we called them back then.

Kaitlyn walked over and dropped a bit of sausage in the can. Dalton scooped out some beans and put them on her bun. She looked at him, and he looked at her, and instantly they knew they would love each other forever.

Unfortunately, five minutes later, they walked into a frozen lake that was clearly marked as dangerous, but Kaitlyn didn’t have her glasses, and Dalton was distracted by a stain on his shirt.

81 years later, they thawed out and can finally live out their dream of raising two cats in the San Fernando Valley.
